Carl August Sandburg was born on January 6, 1878, in Galesburg, Illinois, to August and Clara Anderson, Swedish immigrants to the United States. Son of a blacksmith's helper and the second of seven children, Sandburg worked from an early age and left school before graduating from the eighth grade.
